It totally depends on one's madhhab (Islamic tradition, or school of jurisprudence). And even within a given madhhab, different scholars come to different conclusions about crabs. I tend to follow Hanafi traditions by default (as I live in a predominantly Hanafi community), and know a number of people in my community who eat crabs and an equal number who don't. Whenever something is so vigorously debated, it's not clearly haram in my opinion. Kinda like turtles.
are crabs permitted within the halal tradition? I know for sure they're not kosher.
