On the rack

One of the things I'm really looking forward to in our new house is, after living there a while, designing a new kitchen from scratch. The kitchen is such a focal room for a house, I want it to communicate well with all the living spaces including the verandah, and I also, of course, want to create a space where the flows work right and the work flows right, where people can easily and pleasantly cook aound one another, while including lounging guests in the conversational process.

Anyway, this is all a ways away, but I did recently obtain one object which I had hoped would be a part of it all: the voodoo knife rack.

I first saw the voodoo knife rack many months ago online. Unfortunately, it was still in development stage, so I had to wait until now to order it. When it became available, I got right on it, but I'm disappointed to report that the final product is not nearly as cool as I had hoped. Here's the original prootype photo:

And here's what I got in the post:

As you can see, in the original prototype there were no shields behind the figure. The knives just poked right on through, which was much more voodoo, I must say. Real voodoo has no safety net, and seeing the blades was necessary for the effect, I think.

Also, the final product was much more cheap-plasticky than I would have liked.

But the real kicker came from Kepler. When I opened the box and set up the display, he was fascinated. The evil giggle slipped out of his mouth as he cackled, "That dead man has a knife in his head! Funny!" I must sit down with him one of these days and explain a little bit about what he should and should not say in front of his mom. The end result being that our future beautiful kitchen will not feature this particular object.

Oh, well. It was worth a try. Anyone want it?
